How to Brake Properly on a Motorcycle

Tips

Braking is a fundamental aspect when it comes to building rider confidence. At NG BRAKES, we understand how important it is to fully master the key techniques for effective braking in order to achieve the highest level of safety. That’s why we want to share with you the essential techniques for braking safely on a motorcycle.

To brake correctly, the first step—although it may seem obvious—is understanding how your motorcycle’s braking system works. It’s important to remember that the front brake provides most of the braking power. However, the rear brake should be used as a complement, as it helps maintain the bike’s stability.

Since every ride or route has its own specific demands, braking techniques may vary accordingly. With that in mind, here are the different braking techniques to safely slow down or stop your motorcycle.

How to brake on the road?

When riding on open roads, speeds are generally higher than in urban areas, which makes proper braking even more important for safety. When braking on the road, the first step is to use engine braking—that is, roll off the throttle and let the motorcycle naturally reduce speed. To do this correctly, you should downshift progressively, allowing the speed to decrease smoothly. This means that the brakes need to apply less force to stop the bike, resulting in a more gradual and controlled deceleration.

The next step is to apply the rear brake lightly a few moments before engaging the front brake, which provides greater efficiency and precision, resulting in a more balanced stop. This helps prevent excessive weight transfer to the front end and reduces the risk of wheel lock-up. At all times, braking should be progressive and smooth to avoid sudden stopping or loss of stability.

How to brake while cornering?

It’s also important to remember that harsh braking should be avoided when approaching a corner. Ideally, you should brake gently before entering the turn and gradually release the brake once you reach the turning point. This helps maintain the correct line and stability throughout the corner.

How to brake in the city?

The technique for braking in urban environments is very similar to road braking, but performed at lower speeds. Essentially, you should apply the rear brake gently and progressively add the front brake until the motorcycle comes to a complete stop. When riding in the city, there are additional factors to consider, such as road markings or manhole covers. Ideally, you should avoid braking on these surfaces, as they can become slippery and compromise braking effectiveness or balance.

How to perform an emergency stop correctly?

Emergency braking is one of the most critical situations a rider can face, which is why it’s essential to know the correct technique. The key is to stay calm, allowing you to quickly assess the situation and react appropriately. Start by progressively applying the rear brake to slightly reduce speed and help maintain balance. A moment later, firmly but progressively apply the front brake while continuing to use the rear brake, until the motorcycle comes to a complete stop. To execute this manoeuvre correctly, it’s crucial to maintain balance and avoid losing control of the bike.
