Planning a Motorcycle Trip?

Little by little, we’re starting to make plans again. Some of us are thinking about shorter routes, closer to home, while others — more optimistic — are already dreaming of longer adventures in both distance and duration.
Either way, when we organize a medium- or long-distance motorcycle trip, we need to plan a number of key aspects that will make the journey smoother and far more enjoyable. We can divide the preparation into three main categories.
Motorcycle:
- A pre-trip inspection and tune-up will give you peace of mind before hitting the road.
- Thoroughly check all safety equipment, such as a reflective vest and an emergency warning beacon or triangle.
- A basic tool kit for emergencies is essential. Always include the tools that come with the bike, and consider adding compact multi-tools that save weight and space.
- Basic spare parts. If your route takes you through remote areas where supplies may be hard to find, anticipate what parts could wear out or break and carry them with you. It’s always better to “carry them just in case” than to end up stranded in the middle of nowhere.
- Distribute your luggage evenly on the bike. Stability and balance are essential for your safety.
Route:
- Plan the route in advance by calculating stops, fuel breaks, accommodation, sightseeing, and rest points. You can always improvise along the way, but good planning lets you enjoy the trip more fully.
- Weather matters too. A reliable forecast and climate research done ahead of time will help you avoid unpleasant surprises.
Rider:
- Proper protective gear adapted to the season and the region you’ll be traveling through. A layering system gives you flexibility, since temperatures can vary widely between early morning and midday.
- Helmet and intercom systems if traveling with others. Make sure devices are fully charged and tested before departure. Your helmet, properly certified, should also be checked for visor function, fastening systems, locks and inner padding.
