Tips and tricks for braking your motorcycle in the city
Tips
Riding (and braking) in the city is a challenge for many riders, who prefer wide open spaces and the relative calm of the road. And when it comes to motorcycles… things get even more complicated. Just like cyclists, motorcyclists who commute through big cities must be aware of something very important: to many drivers, they are invisible. That’s why staying alert is more important than ever.
It’s a demanding environment, but don’t worry. Skill comes with experience. And of course, by listening to more seasoned riders, for whom the city is their natural habitat. Since brakes are our specialty, we want to help you brake safely and confidently in the madness of urban traffic. With these tips and a set of NG BRAKES brakes, you’ll have nothing to fear.
- Learn how to brake properly. It may sound obvious, but it’s essential. If you’re new to riding, our advice is to take a riding course — ideally with your own motorcycle. That way, you’ll get to know it well and feel more comfortable at all times.
- Old-school advice… Always keep two fingers on both brake levers if you ride a scooter, or your fingers on the front brake and your right foot ready for the rear brake if you ride a geared bike. This way, you’ll be able to react quickly if needed.
- We know that braking in the city often requires fast reactions. But it’s important not to brake too abruptly if you want to maintain stability. Ideally, apply the rear brake progressively first, and then do the same with the front brake.
- Pay attention to the road surface. In the city, there are many elements that may seem harmless but — especially in the rain — can catch you out. Road markings, drain covers, metal plates, possible fuel spills… It’s important to avoid braking on them, especially when the pavement is wet, as you may slip and fall.
With these four tricks and a bit of practice, you and your motorcycle will become kings of the city.
