Types of braking systems
There are two types of braking systems on motorcycles: disc brakes and drum brakes. The disc braking system, which is the most widely used, consists of a hydraulic master cylinder, the brake disc and the calipers. When the rider pulls the brake lever, brake fluid travels through the brake lines to the calipers, where the pistons push the pads against the disc, creating the friction needed to stop the motorcycle. The drum brake system, although still used on some low-displacement motorcycles, is now largely obsolete due to its lower efficiency.
Key components
Each part of the braking system plays an essential role in its operation:
- Brake levers: Connect the rider to the braking system and allow the brakes to be applied.
- Master cylinder and reservoir: Regulate the pressure and the amount of brake fluid sent through the system.
- Brake fluid: Transfers force from the lever or pedal to the brake calipers.
- Brake lines: Carry the brake fluid to the calipers.
- Brake calipers: House the pistons that push the brake pads against the disc.
- Brake pads: Make contact with the disc to generate the friction needed to slow or stop the motorcycle.

ABS brakes: innovation in safety
ABS brakes have significantly improved motorcycle safety by preventing wheel lock-up during hard braking. This system uses sensors and a control unit to automatically adjust braking force when it detects a potential lock-up, reducing the risk of accidents. Since 2016, all new motorcycles sold in the European Union are required to be equipped with ABS.
