How motorcycle brake discs have evolved over the past decades
General
The history of motorcycling has always been closely linked to the pursuit of innovation. At NG BRAKES, we have been working for more than 25 years with the goal of creating top-quality products, incorporating cutting-edge technological know-how and innovating in design and manufacturing processes. Today, we take a look at the evolution that brake discs have undergone since their origins.
Early braking systems
The first braking systems used on motorcycles were similar to those found on bicycles. However, as motorcycles became faster, this system proved insufficient. Drum brakes then appeared as an alternative. Finally, from the 1960s onwards, the first brake discs were developed, enabling the production of faster and lighter motorcycles.
The arrival of brake discs
The Lambretta 175 TV, launched in 1963, was the first scooter to feature a disc brake. This system consists of a steel disc mounted on the wheel which, through a hydraulic pump, activates a piston that pushes the brake pads against the disc, allowing the motorcycle to reduce speed progressively. This innovation marked a revolution in braking, increasing safety and efficiency and, as a result, enabling the development of more powerful and lighter motorcycles.
A revolutionary change
These early disc brake models helped solve overheating issues and offered greater durability. However, despite their initial success, they also had some drawbacks—the main one being reduced performance in wet conditions. At NG BRAKES, we have worked tirelessly to develop brake discs that ensure safe braking regardless of weather conditions.
A long journey
The evolution of brake discs has been continuous. This has led to the emergence of different types of discs adapted to the specific needs of each motorcycle. Today, we have perforated discs that further reduce overheating, as well as discs with carbon fiber outer rings designed to be as lightweight as possible—like those used in MotoGP.
Brake discs today
Brake disc systems have become a vital benchmark in terms of safety and performance. Today, they are used on the vast majority of motorcycles, with the exception of some scooters. At NG BRAKES, we offer top-level brake discs with options for all types of motorcycles. To achieve this, we focus on the constant pursuit of innovation to deliver maximum safety and performance on two wheels.
