How Are Brake Discs Manufactured?
General
At NG Brakes, we have been designing and manufacturing motorcycle brake discs since 1997—one of the most important components when it comes to rider safety. In this article, we want to explain how they are made.
The process begins with a steel plate (iron + carbon). Using laser cutting or stamping, we extract the disc shape that our design department has previously defined according to the technical requirements of each model.
Next, the disc undergoes a heat treatment in order to adjust the material properties for the final intended use. After that, it moves on to machining—the most important stage of the entire process—because this is where the disc takes its definitive form, including all perforations, grooves, profiles, and contours.
This machining is carried out with state-of-the-art equipment, offering key advantages such as high precision in the contours and virtually no variation in the material’s microstructure, meaning its mechanical properties remain intact.
Machining tools generate two fundamental movements:
- The main cutting or penetration movement, which removes material by cutting, drilling, etc.
- The feed movement, which controls the tool path while the main cutting action is performed.
After machining, the disc goes through a grinding process. Carefully, through abrasion, any remaining burrs or micro-marks from previous operations are removed. As the name suggests, the piece is refined so the final product meets all the performance demands it was designed for.
At the same time, a strict inspection takes place, checking measurements, tolerances, overall appearance, weight, and thickness to ensure full compliance with the original technical blueprint.
The next stage is laser engraving, where all required user information is marked onto the disc, along with the NG Brakes logo, which distinguishes the product from competitors.
Finally, the discs are stored and prepared for shipment through our wide distributor network.
All manufacturing processes are certified under ISO 9001:2015 by TÜV, certificate number 0.04.04191. This certification guarantees the quality of our brake discs and the entire process of design, production, and distribution.
Every model released to the market has been tested by racing teams and professional riders. Thanks to their feedback, we continuously incorporate improvements and performance enhancements—benefits that ultimately reach you on the road.
