Have you ever noticed the different brake discs available for motorbikes? The various shapes and sizes of these components have a reason that meets the different needs of each segment. For example, floating brake discs are ideal for sport bikes, thanks to their vibration-reducing mechanism. Oversized discs are ideal for track use, as they increase braking power, while drilled and petal discs are perfect for preventing overheating. Today, at NG BRAKES, as brake disc experts, we tell you about the main types and their advantages.
The most common and well-known brake discs are those that consist of a perforated steel disc that is mounted on the axles of the motorbike. It works together with a brake caliper with one or more brake pads which, when the lever is actuated, press on the disc to progressively brake the wheel in a constant and safe manner. Today’s technology in the two-wheel sector has contributed to the evolution of this component, creating new and varied types that adapt to the specific needs of each rider and improve the performance of his or her bike. The different types include:
Perforated brake discs
Perforated brake discs are distinguished, as the name suggests, by having perforations along their surface to dissipate heat more efficiently, improving braking in all conditions. In addition, the perforations in the disc help to remove water or debris, which is very beneficial in wet conditions.
Floating brake discs
Floating brake discs are characterised by their construction in two parts: an internal part, which is the one that is anchored to the motorbike, and an external part, which is the one that will be in contact with the calipers. These parts are millimetrically separated to allow limited axial movement, which corrects the small misalignments that can occur during braking between the caliper and the disc. This reduces vibration and improves feel, in turn significantly improving performance, especially in extreme conditions. These models are useful and common on sport bikes, as their advanced design reduces the risk of deformation, even when the temperature rises, and ensures more precise and efficient braking.
Oversized brake discs
For those who ride their bikes on the racetrack, oversize brake discs are the best option. They are so called because they have a larger diameter than the standard discs, which gives them more braking power. This is because their larger size increases the distance between the disc shaft and the wheel, which allows for more braking power.
Petal brake discs
Petal brake discs are characterised by their wavy or cut-out shape. This means that the outer part of the disc is not always in contact with the caliper, creating a ‘seesaw’ effect, which helps to prevent overheating.
At NG BRAKES we have quality brake discs of all these types and for a multitude of motorbike models. If you want to check them out, just go to the ‘Catalogue’ section of our website and filter by your bike model to see all the options available for it.
