The braking system is one of the most important components of a motorbike, as the safety of the rider depends on it. At NG BRAKES, with more than 25 years manufacturing high quality brake discs for motorbikes, ATVs and bicycles, we know well its importance and we want to share with you some keys about how it works.
Types of braking systems
There are two types of braking systems on motorbikes: disc brakes and drum brakes. The disc system, the most commonly used, consists of a hydraulic pump, disc and calipers. When the brake lever is actuated, the brake fluid travels through the brake hoses to the calipers, where the pistons push the brake pads against the disc, generating the friction necessary to stop the motorbike. The drum system, although still used on some smaller bikes, is almost obsolete as it is less efficient.
Key components
Each part of the braking system plays an essential role in its operation:
- Brake levers: connect the rider to the braking system and allow the brakes to be applied.
- Brake pump and reservoir: regulate the pressure and amount of brake fluid sent to the circuit.
- Brake fluid: Transmits the force from the brake lever or pedal to the brake callipers.
- Brake hoses: Transport the brake fluid to the calipers.
- Brake calipers: Contain the pistons that push the brake pads against the disc.
- Brake pads: Make contact with the disc to generate the friction necessary for braking.
- Brake discs: Made of steel, they are the speciality of NG BRAKES and the main component around which the entire braking system revolves.
ABS brakes: Innovation in safety
ABS brakes have significantly improved motorbike safety by preventing wheel lock-up during hard braking. The system uses sensors and a computer to automatically adjust braking force when it detects a possible lock-up, reducing the risk of accidents. Since 2016, all new motorbikes in the European Union must be fitted with this system.
The importance of maintenance
Keeping your braking system in good condition is essential to ensure the safety and performance of your motorbike. At NG BRAKES, we specialise in the manufacture of high quality brake discs and recommend that you regularly check all components of the system to ensure a safe and enjoyable ride.
Knowing how your bike’s braking system works will allow you to enjoy a safer and more controlled ride. Trust NG BRAKES, your braking expert, to ensure that every ride is an optimal experience.
