Riding a motorbike is an exciting experience, but facing different weather conditions can add an extra challenge to any journey. Rain, wind, snow and fog require specific skills and extra precautions to ensure safety. From NG BRAKES we share with you the key recommendations to stay in control and enjoy the journey, whatever the weather.
In the rain: gentleness and caution
Rain considerably reduces tyre grip on the road, doubling the risk of skidding. In these conditions, avoid sudden manoeuvres and drive gently. To minimise the risk of aquaplaning:
- Ride on drier areas of the road and avoid puddles or culverts.
- Keep the handlebars steady and, if you feel the bike skidding, ease off the throttle until traction is regained.
- Reduce lean in corners and increase your safety distance to give yourself more reaction time.
Be aware that the first drops of rain can form a very slippery film as they mix with the dirt on the asphalt, increasing the risk of a fall. Also avoid riding on painted surfaces such as zebra crossings, as they become extremely slippery when wet.
In windy conditions: maintain control and stability.
Strong wind, especially in gusts, can easily destabilise a motorbike. To combat this:
- Adopt an aerodynamic position by moving closer to the tank to reduce wind resistance, trying to stay inside the dome as much as possible.
- Tilt your body slightly to the side the wind is blowing from and hold the handlebars firmly.
- Avoid riding close to trucks or other bulky vehicles that may generate dangerous turbulence when overtaking.
- Slow down and use lower gears to help you maintain more control in gusty conditions.
Snow and ice: use extreme caution or avoid riding on the roads
Snow and icy conditions are particularly difficult for motorbikes because of the drastic reduction in grip. In these cases it is best to stay off the bike, but if you can’t avoid riding:
- Ride at low speed and avoid sudden manoeuvres.
- Use the rear brake more than the front brake to maintain stability.
- Take advantage of tracks left by other vehicles to improve grip.
- Prepare the bike with snow chains.
In foggy conditions: maximum visibility and concentration
Riding a motorbike in fog is a challenge that requires extreme caution and attention. Reduced visibility can make it difficult to perceive speed and obstacles on the road, so there are a number of precautions to follow:
- Keep your headlights on low beam and, if available, turn on your fog lights. Avoid using your high beams, as they can reflect off the fog and dazzle you. You can even switch on the hazard warning lights if necessary.
- Drive at low speed and increase your safety distance considerably.
- If visibility is too limited, stop in a safe place until conditions improve.
- Be aware of the sounds around you to detect the presence of other vehicles and, once the fog lifts, remember that the asphalt will be wet, requiring careful riding.
Motorcycling in adverse weather conditions can be challenging but, with the right precautions, it is possible to minimise the risks. Adapting your riding to the weather, staying focused and making sure your bike is in perfect condition are key to enjoying the ride safely. Always remember to prioritise your wellbeing and if conditions are too extreme, postponing the journey or using another mode of transport is always the best decision.
