Winter is here and, with it, low temperatures and adverse weather. Therefore, during this time of the year you should pay special attention to your riding so that the cold, rain or snow do not play a trick on you and you can enjoy a totally comfortable and safe experience with your motorbike in winter.
Even at this time of year, you don’t have to give up the mobility advantages of a motorbike. Among other things, it’s very important that you use the right equipment and take certain precautions while riding in order to ride your motorbike safely in winter.
The right equipment
Our advice about wearing the right equipment when riding a motorbike applies in any context, but especially at this time of year it is recommended to wear warm clothing under your normal clothing. In addition, gloves, trousers and jackets are best if they are winter-specific. Always carry waterproof and, if possible, brightly coloured clothing to avoid getting wet if it rains and to increase your visibility at this time of year when there is less light.
Your bike in top condition
Keep your bike in top condition for safe riding. Grease the chain frequently, as rain washes the grease away. If you live in an area where snowfall is frequent, we recommend you to wash it after use, as the salt used to prevent snow accumulation is very corrosive and can damage the metal parts of your bike. Also, check your lights are working properly, especially the rear lights, which are very important to be seen now that there are fewer hours of daylight.
Last but not least, pay attention to your bike’s tyres in winter, as low temperatures can make it difficult for them to warm up and reach their working temperature. Check tyre pressures regularly and make sure tyre treads are deep enough. Otherwise, they won’t let rainwater through properly and you could suffer a skid.
Preventive driving
Always use preventive driving, but especially when riding your motorbike in winter. In the event of adverse weather conditions, riding in a preventative manner will ensure that your ride is completely safe. Also, whenever possible, avoid stepping on the lines of the road, as they can be very slippery, and don’t brake too hard at pedestrian crossings.
